
Technology certifications have become an important part of the modern technology industry. Vendors such as cloud providers, software companies, and technology organizations offer certifications as a way to validate an individual’s knowledge of specific products, platforms, and technologies.
While certifications can be valuable, they should be viewed as one indicator of knowledge; not a definitive measure of technical skill.
Why Certifications Matter

The Problem With Certification-Driven Hiring

When a professional must repeatedly pay examination, renewal, training, or membership fees simply to maintain an existing credential, the certification can begin to resemble a recurring revenue stream as much as a measurement of professional competence.
The expiration of a certification does not necessarily mean that an individual’s technical abilities have expired.
An engineer who has spent five years successfully designing and operating a particular technology does not suddenly lose that experience because a certificate reaches its expiration date.
A certification expiration date means that the credential is no longer considered current under the vendor’s certification program. It does not automatically mean that the person has become less capable.
When Renewal Provides Real Value
This does not mean that certification renewal is inherently unnecessary.
For rapidly evolving technologies, periodic reassessment can provide real value. A professional working with cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, or other rapidly changing technologies benefits from keeping their knowledge current.
The important question is whether the renewal process actually measures meaningful updated knowledge.
If renewal requires professionals to learn substantial new capabilities, demonstrate updated knowledge, or complete meaningful continuing education, it can serve a legitimate professional purpose.
If renewal primarily consists of paying another fee or completing minimal requirements to keep an existing credential active, its value becomes more questionable.
Certification Should Be Part of the Picture
Certifications have an important place in the technology industry.
They can provide structure for learning, establish vendor-recognized knowledge, help professionals advance their careers, and give employers another data point when evaluating candidates.
But certifications should never be treated as a substitute for experience.
The strongest technology professionals typically combine certification, education, hands-on experience, continuous learning, and the ability to solve real-world problems.
A certificate can demonstrate that someone has learned something.
Experience demonstrates what they can actually do with that knowledge.
Ultimately, a certification can open the door, but practical ability determines what happens after you walk through it.
